American Odyssey

Our site is still under construction, we thank you for your patience

Let me tell you a little about myself.  I was born in England in 1959.  My mother was a British subject and my father an American serviceman.  I traveled to Europe, England, and all across America in my youth, before finally settling in the Mojave Desert in Southern California.

I began sewing in 1975.  I love hand embroidery and sewing.  I became interested in costuming about the 1980's.  I joined the International Costumer's Guild, Costumer's Guild West chapter.  I attended events, starting with the local science fiction conventions, Renaissance Pleasure Faire, and then traveling through the Southwest United States and to Northern California to attend science fiction, fantasy, and historical conventions.

I have always had a love for photography.  My favorite camera is still a SLR, manual camera.  I have two digital cameras and I still prefer the old fashioned one for quality photographs.  I learned to take photographs with a Yashica and now own a Ricoh.  I have all the fancy lens attachments for the camera and still prefer a standard lens.  I feel I have more control over what I get.  I am not playing a guessing game.

I got married in 1987, and from the time frame of 1987 to 1999, I dropped out of the costuming scene.  I still continued to sew, make award winning Halloween costumes, dabble in quilting, and went places my husband wanted to go.  This included ATV/dune buggy trips and traveling with him on business trips.  Many times, we would take separate vacations.  However, one of my favorite trips was to the East Coast.  We went to Cape Cod in December.  I loved seeing the ocean, the rain, and the light houses.

In 1996 we split up.  Our divorce was final in 1999.  I had moved to the High Desert out of necessity.  I had a horse, property was cheap, and I could afford to live there.  Three months after moving here, my job transferred me to the same area that I live in.  Life is good.  I dated on and off looking for my Mr. Right.

I met Mike around August of 1999.  We were both members of the Brandin' Iron Dance and Social Club and would attend their members only events.

In October, the woman Mike was renting from sold the house out from under him.  He had no where to go.  I had an extra bedroom and horse property, so I offered him a place to stay.  He moved in with his horse and two dogs.  The first night he was here was the night we had the Hector Quake.  We both met each other in the doorway in our PJ's as we rode the shaking out.

As he was my roommate, we did not even consider a romantic interlude.  He was interested in a friend of mine.  She was in a long term relationship but stated she wanted out.  He was perfect, for my friend.  However, every time he would get tickets to go somewhere, she would stand him up or show up with her "boyfriend."  That left Mike wanting to go somewhere and no one to go with him.  I became his "buddy," we began to pal around together.  We were friends.

In November, we attend the Harvest Fair.  He discovers that I have a love of costuming, I discover he has a love of costuming, we decide that we will attend the event in costume.

Another month goes along and they still haven't firmed up their relationship.  My friend keeps teasing me in work, "Why don't you and Mike get together, you have so much in common."  We plan to go to a concert together just before Thanksgiving.  That morning Mike and I decide to go a Single Action Shooting Society (S.A.S.S.) event.  Neither one of us have been, we just want to see what is going on.  We are hooked.  After the event, we go shooting out in one of the canyons.  I had never fired a pistol before.  What fun we had.  We come home and get ready for the concert.  I call my friend and ask her if she wants us to pick her up.  She says, "No, but I will be there."

She showed up with company.

Thanksgiving comes around and instead of inviting Mike to her house for dinner, she invites the old boyfriend and his family.  Mike's parents are out of town, my parents don't really celebrate Thanksgiving, so that leaves the two of us with nothing to do.  I suggest we BBQ steaks, have a nice dinner, and watch the football game.  We had a nice time.  I was like one of the guys.

Cowboy Christmas is here.  We have invited her to join us in Vegas.  She doesn't show up, Mike says he is tired of waiting for her to make up her mind and he feels we have more in common, why don't we try dating instead of just hanging out.  Our friendship is history.  Michael asked me to marry him, 3 years later, at Wyatt Earp Days in Tombstone, Az.  I didn't dare say no.  The rest is history.

We got married on Valentine's Day while Mike was deployed at March A.F.R.B. in preparation for Operation Enduring Freedom.

Our hobbies include costuming, shooting, scuba diving, and motor cycle riding.  We are also active in The American Legion.

Mike will retire from the Air Force Reserves in September of 2006.  Both of us work for the County of San Bernardino.
